Hepatitis and chronic alcohol abuse are frequent causes. Liver damage caused by cirrhosis can't be undone, but further damage can be limited. Initially patients may experience fatigue, weakness, and weight loss. During later stages, patients may develop jaundice (yellowing of the skin), gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal swelling, and confusion. Treatments focus on the underlying cause. In advanced cases, a liver transplant may be needed.

A detailed description of the Hepato-pulmonary syndrome including its definition, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment. The pathophysiology includes nitric oxide in the pulmonary vasculature which results in intrapulmonary vasodilatation. This causes the classical and unique symptom of platypnea and orthodeoxia.

A detailed description of the Arterial Pulse including its waveform and pathological subtypes. Also discussed are the abnormal rates (tachycardia and bradycardia) and their causes, abnormal rhythm (including regularly regular and irregularly irregular pulses) and abnormal character (including pulses bisferiens, pulses parvus et tarsus, pulsus alternans, pulses paradoxus and others.) Description of pulse in various pathological states including Aortic stenosis and aortic regurgitation is also included. Finally there is also a description of the peripheral signs of aortic regurgitation.

How to perform a Thyroid Gland Examination - Clinical Skills Revision

The thyroid examination is one of the first sessions of the clinical skills block for medical students at Warwick Medical School - largely as it touches lightly on to other clinical areas, such as the cardiac examination, and the peripheral neurological examination making it an excellent starting point for building further knowledge


This is a clinical examination of the thyroid gland is performed by Dr James Gill following the approach in Macleod’s Clinical examination.

Please note that there is no ABSOLUTE way to perform a clinical examination. Different institutions and even clinicians will have differing degrees of variations - the aim is the effectively identify medically relevant signs.


However, during OSCE assessments. Different medical schools, nursing colleges and other health professional courses will have their own preferred approach to a clinical evaluation - you should concentrate on THEIR marks schemes for your assessments.

Lesson on clinical examination of a scaphoid fracture and assessment of the anatomic snuffbox. The scaphoid bone is one of the carpal bones of the wrist. A scaphoid fracture is important to rule out due to risk of avascular necrosis, which is a compromise of bone vasculature leading to death of the bone. Scaphoid fractures can occur with a FOOSH injury. In this lesson, we discuss the clinical assessment to rule out a scaphoid fracture, including assessing and localizing the anatomic snuffbox.
